Solution to MP4 Movies Not Playing via DLNA

This article shows you a way to convert the .mp4 file to a different codec (while letting it remain .mp4), in order to be able to play MP4 on the DLNA server.

I downloaded a bunch of .mp4 files (80 or so) from a single location, but none of them play via DLNA. Actually, I should say that they’re not even VISIBLE when I try and point to them on my TV. So I’m not getting an error; I just don’t see anything. So, any way to help me play MP4 via DLNA without hassle?

I’ve done some checking. Perhaps this particular group of mp4s, is different – perhaps a codec issue. MP4 is a flexible container format which can store just about anything (H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, MPEG-4(A)SP, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, H.265/HEVC, VC-1/WMV, Real Video, Microsoft MPEG4 V2, VP8, VP9, MVC). Therefore if you can’t play MP4 video files over DLNA, it’s probably that your MP4 file codec is not compatible with DLNA.

In this case, a quick solution is to convert MP4 to DLNA more friendly format. Below is a step-by-step guide for you:

First, download and install Brorsoft Video Converter (or Mac). It is just the right tool to help you achieve the goal. With it, you can easily change any video including MKV, VOB, TiVo, AVI, MOV, and more to DLNA compatible video files with fast encoding speed and excellent output quality.

Then, run the program and load your source video files .mp4 format into it.

Next, tap Format bar and choose a DLNA supported video format. MPEG-4, MPEG-2 from “Common Video” are all the proper choice.

Tip: Click Settings button to adjust video/audio parameters. As for DLNA streaming, select a proper bitrate and resolution based on your WLAN bandwidth.

Last step, click Convert button to start converting MP4 media to a DLNA compatible video. After the conversion, you can get the resulted videos by clicking the Open button and then stream and play MP4 via DLNA freely.
